To Be A King [VERIFIED]
Every man a king, so there would be no such thing as a man or woman who did not have the necessities of life, who would not be dependent upon the whims and caprices and ipsi dixit of the financial martyrs for a living. What do we propose by this society? We propose to limit the wealth of big men in the country. There is an average of $15,000 in wealth to every family in America. That is right here today.
To Be A King
Nachtmagen rages through the N'yrthghar as hagfiends and the traitorous lords conspire to defeat the new king. With Grank and Theo at his side, Hoole must forge an army of free owls strong enough to defeat the forces of darkness massing on the horizon. The power of the one Ember fires the young king's very gizzard and he grows great. But for young Hoole there is a danger much closer than treacherous lords and the poison of half-hags. For magic - even good magic - brings great peril to those who wield it.So Soren, Coryn, and the Band read the final legend and glimpse what the future may demand of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole.
In this final book of the Legends trilogy Hoole reclaims the throne of his father and goes on to wage a war against the forces of chaos, greed and oppression led by the powerful warlord-tyrants. Grank, the first collier, uses his skills with fire and metals to forge weapons for battle. With great trepidation Hoole uses the power of the Ember in the final, decisive battle and wins. At the dawn of a new era of peace, Hoole searches for the ideal place to establish not a kingdom but an order of free owls and finds the Great Tree.
My new book, Paths to Kingship in Medieval Latin Europe, explores what royal lordship meant to people living through these changes. I am particularly interested in the degree to which kingship was a transeuropean phenomenon; the role of the people in determining what it meant; and the extent to which it was defined by tensions and contradictions. Beginning with the first, there was little to distinguish concepts of royal power promoted in Hungary from those upheld in England or Armenia. Each built on common premises: the royal office had been created by god, but rulers ought to be chosen by their people. They were supposed to do justice, work for the common good, and protect the weak. That required great power, but as a result, they were in constant danger of falling prey to its temptations. If they succumbed, they would turn into tyrants, or into gluttonous buffoons who would cause pestilence to plague the land. They would cease to be guardians of their people, and would become its oppressors instead. Good kings would seek out wise and virtuous men to counsel them, but it also fell to the great men of the realm to ensure that kings acted in accordance with the law of god. Royal status was subject to oversight and remained dependent upon performance.
Since "a king" uses an indefinite article, it suggests that he may become any one of a number of kings. In most cases where a person may become king, there is only one king in the political structure he inhabits. For instance, if he is in the line of succession for the English throne, he probably cannot become king of France or Denmark without marrying into that royal family. The equivalent phrase to "I can't wait to be king" would use a definite article - it could be rephrased as "I can't wait to be the king", since there is only one kingship he is eligible to accede to.
The choice between "the" and "a" or other determiners in such cases, is exactly the same as it is for any other noun. In relation to the word "king", it will probably depend on whether one is considering this king as one of a number of kings, in which case the preferred determiner would be "a" - or whether this king is being viewed as the only king, in which case we would favour "the".
Now, you may be given the impression from this that nouns occurring as bare role NPs are interchangeable with normal noun phrases. This is not so. A minor point is that a bare role NP nearly always picks out a unique specific title or role. In this respect, bare role NPs are similar to Proper Names. Furthermore, the organisation or body that this role is in relation to must be obvious from the discourse. If there are several managers in a particular organisation, you cannot want to become Manager. The reason in this case is that it is not clear which unique managerial role you wish to inhabit. If there are several kings under discussion, we cannot modify a bare role NP to show which one we want to refer to. So the following is malformed:
If we are considering an individual more than a role; if the king is being considered as one of many; if the phrase is not being used with a predicative function but as a direct object, subject or so forth; then we will have to use the word king as part of a normal noun phrase, where - if it is singular - it will have to occur with a suitable determiner. The range of determiners will be the same as for any other singular countable noun, and like other noun phrases, the determiner that is used will depend on the context.
In other words, one can be "a king" or "the king" and still not "be king", if such states do not apportion to their monarchs the features of "being king". And, one can "be king" even without being "a king" or "the king", if such features are made available in some other way, unlikely as that may be.
In a contest for the best king of Israel, David would surely win. Though not without flaws, he was an incredible leader, and a very impressive man. However, God had taken him through a grueling regime to prepare him to be king. Not just any king, but a king worthy of becoming a foreshadow of the Messiah.
David had been anointed king at the tender age of 17, but only sat on the throne at the age of 30. That is a long gap. As a teenager, he had been given a promise. A bonafide prophet had come along, snubbed each and every one of his brothers, and been instructed by God, no less, to declare that he would be king. Sacred oil was poured over him to testify to the fact. Little did little David know, it would be many long years before that day would come, and the time in between was going to be very, very tough. It was during those years that David learned how to handle a crisis, how to love his enemies, honor authority, do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with his God.
Speak less than necessary. Never advice others unless asked. Stop when asked or given hint in simple talking or amusing discussion. Never argue or debate. A king knows who he is and never argues to win others to his side.
A king has a noble battle to fight and an adventure to live. Start loving the journey. A journey full of struggle is far more beautiful than a safe and boring home. Make the journey your school; the encounters your teachers. After you have hit your goals and have rescued the queen, you should settle for a home but only for a little while. Get the queen with you on your next adventure.
In a monarchy an emperor and king are both rulers, but the power associated with them is different. They can be compared to regional manager and the CEO of a company. An empire can have many kingdoms within it; the emperor rules the entire empire while kings (or queens) rule smaller kingdoms within the empire. While the king (like the regional manager) has total control over his territory, the emperor (like the CEO) is the one who makes the final decision for the entire region.
This distinction is not universal. There are many examples in history where large kingdoms have been called empires but have been ruled by a single monarch, a king or queen. For example, King George V, Edward VIII and George VI were all kings of the United Kingdom and emperors of India.
An emperor had the highest power in the whole empire. He represented the empire as a whole which was further divided into further kingdoms. Most kings were engaged in battle during those times to expand their kingdom. Kings usually represented a larger system which had and customs regarding succession, duties, and powers. The Emperor was the one who incorporated the rules and policies of the empire. The king within the empire helped in implementing these rules. 041b061a72
